FRP, cast iron, MS or RCC: choosing an earth pit cover

How to choose an earth pit cover by traffic, location and access needs, and what each material does well, from lightweight FRP to heavy-duty cast iron.

Short answer: Choose by what goes over the pit. FRP suits footpaths, rooftops, landscaped areas and corrosive sites. Cast iron suits roads, driveways and loading areas. MS is a strong, economical middle option. RCC is the low-cost choice for open ground. Whatever you choose, the cover should keep the test link visible and reachable.

What a pit cover is for

An earth pit cover is not decoration. It:

  • keeps soil, debris and water out of the inspection chamber,
  • stops people tripping or vehicles dropping into the pit,
  • protects the test link and connection,
  • marks where the pit is, so it can be found and tested years later.

A pit that cannot be found or opened is a pit that does not get tested.

The four materials

MaterialStrengthsWatch out forGood for
FRP (fibre reinforced plastic)Light, corrosion-proof, non-conductive, easy to liftCheck the load rating for anything beyond foot trafficRooftops, solar plants, landscaped areas, coastal and chemical sites
Cast iron (CI)Heavy-duty, stays putWeight; theft risk in some areasRoads, driveways, industrial yards
Mild steel (MS)Strong, cost-effectiveNeeds a good finish (powder coat or galvanising) to resist rustCommercial premises, general industrial
RCC (reinforced concrete)Cheapest, sturdyHeavy to lift; edges can chipOpen ground, utility sites

Five questions to settle

  1. Traffic: pedestrians only, light vehicles, or heavy vehicles? Ask the supplier for the load rating of the exact model.
  2. Surface: soil, paving or concrete? This decides whether the cover sits flush in a frame or in a chamber.
  3. Opening size: it must fit the chamber and leave room to work on the test link.
  4. Environment: coastal, chemical or waterlogged sites favour FRP.
  5. Identification: can the cover be marked with a pit number to match your test register?

Round tapered FRP covers

A tapered circular FRP chamber cover is the common choice for pipe and rod electrodes. The taper seats it firmly in the soil, and holes formed in the cover let the pipe and earthing strip pass through cleanly. It is light enough for one person to lift for testing, and it will not rust.

From Ashima

Ashima manufactures the ACME 10-inch FRP earth pit cover in Jaipur. It is a tapered circular cover with factory-built holes for pipe and strip. We also supply:

  • a 6-inch FRP cover,
  • square MS, cast iron and RCC covers in 300, 450 and 600 mm sizes.

Load ratings for each model are available on enquiry. See all of them on the pit covers page.
